Periodontal treatment involves a range of procedures that target the health of your gums and bone structure supporting your teeth. It is primarily used to treat periodontal or gum disease, a common but potentially serious condition that, if left untreated, can lead to tooth loss. The treatment aims to control the infection and halt the progression of the disease. Depending on the severity of the condition, treatments may include deep cleaning procedures like scaling and root planing, medications, or in more advanced cases, surgical interventions.
Signs that you might need periodontal treatment include persistent bad breath, red or swollen gums, tender or bleeding gums, painful chewing, loose teeth, or sensitive teeth. If you're experiencing any of these symptoms, it's crucial to seek dental advice. However, it's important to note that gum disease can progress without any obvious signs, which is why regular dental check-ups are vital.
The duration of periodontal treatment varies depending on the severity of the gum disease and the type of treatment required. Non-surgical treatments like scaling and root planing may require multiple visits, while surgical procedures might need more recovery time. At Coronado Dental Associates, we'll provide a personalized treatment plan that outlines the expected timeline.
At Coronado Dental Associates, your comfort is our priority. While some discomfort is normal during and after periodontal treatment, we use the latest techniques and anesthetics to minimize pain. Most patients find that the discomfort is manageable and significantly less than the pain and sensitivity associated with untreated gum disease.
Good oral hygiene is crucial after periodontal treatment. This includes regular brushing with a soft-bristle toothbrush, flossing daily, and using an antimicrobial mouthwash. Regular visits to the dentist for cleanings and check-ups are also essential. We'll provide you with specific aftercare instructions tailored to your situation to help ensure the success of your treatment and the health of your smile.
