Laser Therapy in Coronado

Laser therapy uses advanced, laser-based dental tools to provide better patient outcomes. Lasers have been used in dentistry since the late 1980s, but in recent decades they have become much more affordable and versatile.

The two primary types of laser dental tools are soft tissue lasers and hard tissue lasers. Soft tissue lasers use a powerful laser light to heat up a fiber-optic tip, which is used to cut through oral tissue like the gums instead of tools like scalpels or scissors. This is what we use at Coronado Dental Associates.

Hard tissue lasers, on the other hand, use a powerful beam of laser light that can remove hard oral tissue like enamel and dentin. These tools can be used to replace dental drills. “All-tissue” lasers that can treat both soft and hard tissue are also becoming more commonplace.

Laser dentistry has a lot of great benefits. First, it causes very minimal pain, discomfort, and bleeding.

This is because, when the laser touches soft tissue, it immediately cuts away the tissue and then cauterizes (seals) the nerves and blood vessels in the treatment area. This means you will experience almost no discomfort. In fact, anesthesia and sedation are usually not even required for laser treatment.

This also results in a faster treatment process and a quicker recovery after your treatment. Laser tools are very efficient and can cut away tissue precisely to minimize invasiveness and speed up the healing process. Sutures are usually not even required after laser treatment.

A soft tissue laser can be used for any treatment that involves the soft tissue of your cheeks, gums, tongue, or lips. Soft tissue lasers are often used to perform frenectomies for tongue and lips ties, to reshape the gums, to treat gum disease, and to reshape and alter the shape of the gum tissue.

They can also be used to surgically remove canker sores and other mouth sores, or to take biopsies of lesions and abnormalities in the mouth that may require further testing to ensure they are not cancerous.

Laser cold sore treatment uses a different type of laser tool that’s not designed to cut into tissue, but instead delivers a powerful beam of light directly into the cold sore. This light kills the virus that causes the cold sore, which means the cold sore will begin to shrink and fade over time.

The biggest benefit of laser cold sore treatment is that, over time, cold sores will be less likely to occur in treated areas. The more often you get treatment at Coronado Dental Associates, the lower the chance is that you’ll get cold sores in the future.
