What is Preventative Dentistry?

Preventative dentistry is the practice of caring for your teeth to keep them healthy and prevent future dental issues. This approach focuses on maintaining proper oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups to minimize the risk of cavities, gum disease, enamel wear, and more. At Coronado Dental Associates, led by Dr. Melanie Villalobos and Dr. Margaret Meadows, we believe that preventive care is key to a lifelong healthy smile.

Benefits of Preventative Dentistry

The primary benefits of preventative dentistry include:

Decreased Risk of Dental Issues

Regular preventive care helps catch potential problems early, reducing the risk of cavities, root infections, and gum disease.

Cost Savings

By avoiding complex dental procedures through early detection and routine care, patients save on potentially high future costs.

Improved Overall Health

Dental health is linked to overall health. Maintaining oral hygiene can reduce the risk of secondary problems related to poor dental health, such as heart disease and diabetes.

A Brighter, Healthier Smile

Regular cleanings and exams contribute to a brighter smile and boost confidence.

Preventative Dentistry Treatments

At Coronado Dental Associates, we offer a comprehensive range of preventive dentistry services designed to protect your oral health:

Preventive Care

We believe the best way to treat dental issues is to avoid them altogether! With routine checkups every six months, we’ll help you avoid common issues like decay and gum disease.

Stay Healthy

Fluoride Treatments

These essential treatments help strengthen tooth enamel, the outer protective layer of each tooth, making it more resistant to the acid attacks that can cause tooth decay. At Coronado Dental Associates, our fluoride applications are quick and painless, providing lasting benefits that help maintain your dental health between visits.

Dental Sealants

Sealants are a preventive measure that involves applying a clear or shaded plastic material to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, where decay occurs most often. This protective coating shields the grooves on your teeth’s surfaces from food particles and plaque that regular brushing and flossing might miss. Sealants are particularly effective for children and teenagers but are also beneficial for adults at high risk of decay.

Periodontal Care

Our comprehensive periodontal care services are designed to prevent, diagnose, and treat gum disease. We offer deep cleaning, which involves scaling to remove tartar from above and below the gum line, and root planing to smooth rough spots on tooth roots where germs gather. These services are vital for maintaining the health of your gums and supporting structures of your teeth.

Oral Cancer Screenings

Early detection is crucial for effectively treating oral cancer. We use advanced screening techniques to examine your mouth for signs of abnormal tissues. If we find anything concerning, we perform biopsies to analyze the tissue and determine if cancerous or precancerous conditions are present.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a cavity go away on its own?

No, cavities do not go away on their own. Once tooth decay has begun, it requires a dentist's intervention to stop the damage and restore the tooth’s health.

How often do you really need to go to the dentist?

It is recommended to visit the dentist at least twice a year for a regular check-up and cleaning. However, depending on your specific dental health needs, we may recommend more frequent visits.

Is teeth cleaning painful?

Teeth cleaning is generally not painful. Some patients may experience mild discomfort, especially if there has been a long period between cleanings or if there is significant tartar buildup.

What is the correct way to brush your teeth?

The correct way to brush your teeth involves using a soft-bristled brush and fluoride toothpaste. Brush in a circular motion for at least two minutes, covering all surfaces of each tooth. Be sure to brush your tongue and the roof of your mouth to remove bacteria.

What Are Fluoride Treatments?

Fluoride treatments can be provided alongside regular six-month cleanings to keep your teeth strong and healthy, and prevent cavities. Dr. Villalobos will apply a thin layer of fluoride-rich gel or paste to your teeth, then rinse it away after a few minutes.

Fluoride has the unique ability to remineralize or strengthen enamel by attracting essential minerals like calcium and phosphorus the surfaces of your teeth. Because of this, regular fluoride treatments keep your teeth strong and can even reverse minor tooth decay (also known as soft spots).

What Are Dental Sealants?

When properly applied, dental sealants can last up to 10 years, and completely prevent the formation of cavities. They are usually used only on the rear teeth, as these are more cavity-prone.

Sealants consist of a liquid resin that is applied to each tooth individually. This resin is hardened into a clear, durable plastic barrier using a UV light. After this barrier is formed, it protects your enamel from direct contact between oral bacteria, acid and food particles, thereby preventing tooth decay.

What Is Involved In An Oral Cancer Screening?

Oral cancer screenings are beneficial for patients of all ages. Regular exams from a dentist can ensure any potential concerns are dealt with right away. Oral cancer screenings are part of every comprehensive oral exam at our office.

Dr. Villalobos will examine your mouth for any potential signs of oral cancer, such as discolored patches of skin, abnormal bumps or lesions on your tongue, lips, gums, or cheeks. We use intraoral cameras to get a close look at any potential irregularities and in the rare case that we notice an issue, you’ll be able to get help right away.

Do I Need a Mouthguard for Teeth Grinding?

Teeth grinding (bruxism) is a serious issue for many Americans, particularly at night. Repeated, forceful teeth grinding can result in premature damage and wear & tear to your teeth. It also increases your risk of problems like TMJ/TMD (temporomandibular joint disorder), a painful disorder of your jaw joints.

A mouthguard can be a life-changing device if you grind your teeth regularly and suffer from symptoms like headaches, premature tooth damage, and a painful jaw. This plastic oral appliance is designed to fit comfortably over your teeth and prevent direct tooth-to-tooth contact.

Do I Need Periodontal Care for Gum Disease?

The most common symptoms of early gum disease include swelling and inflammation of the gums, gum discoloration, and bleeding excessively when brushing or flossing. Some patients may also get halitosis (persistent bad breath) due to bacteria buildup in the mouth.

If you notice any of these issues, you may need periodontal care, such as deep cleaning (scaling & root planing) at Coronado Dental Associates. During this treatment, we’ll clean between your gums and teeth and smooth the roots of your teeth to remove bacteria. Along with antibiotics, this is often enough to resolve cases of gingivitis.
